Woods Panthers defeat Garville 56 – 41 to post first win of Subway Cup

20th March 2012

Woods Panthers have posted their first win of the Subway Cup season fighting off a very determined Garville side by 15 goals on Friday night at Netball SA stadium.

In what was at times a scrappy match, the Panthers ultimately showed more control in attack and poise through the mid-court then their high spirited opponents.

Although Woods held the lead from early in the first quarter, Garville remained persistent and often came back at Woods just when they looked in control.

Garville opened the scoring from the opening centre pass and were again on the attack after some good defence from GK Tamika Arias. Woods soon settled and took the lead as the shifted the ball well around their attacking circle.

In an entertaining but scrappy first quarter Woods were executing with the ball better then their counterparts and took a 2 goal lead into the first break.

Woods were much more composed at the start of the second quarter extending their lead to 8 goals. Their ball control was much improved allowing GS Kathleen Knott to continue her fine match in the circle.

Woods goal scoring slowed during the middle of the quarter as Garville lifted in the mid-court where space for each side was hard to find due to close marking. Garville appeared to be frustrating Woods who went into half-time 10 goals in front.

The third quarter was a shooting battle between Knott and young Garville shooter Georgie Virgo as both sides continued to battle through the mid-court.

The quarter was Garville’s best for the match as they created more scoring opportunities and outscored Woods by 1 goal in the quarter. Virgo was excellent for her side, showing great athleticism to gather lob passes all match.

Although Woods were not playing their best netball, consolidated late in the quarter and went to the final break with a 9 goal lead.

The final quarter was much better for Woods as Knott and GA Emma Thomas built their combination in the attacking third. Centre Alice Murt kept the ball flowing through transitional play, providing the link to keep the ball moving.

After an up and down game for Woods they finished the match well scoring 18 goals in the quarter. Garville’s effort was good and they produced a tough battle for Woods as well as playing their best match so far this season.

Woods coach Trudy Barker said that while her side was a little up and down, ball movement improved towards the end of the match.

“We had our ups and downs but I think we pulled out of them when we could, I think we started to move the ball quite fluently in the and credit to our defenders who kept us in the game with a solid performance.”

Barker was also happy with the building combination of Kathleen Knott and Emma Thomas in their attacking circle.

“I think their vision and respect for each other really shone through in the end, a good performance from both of them.” She said.

Garville coach Jackie Blyth said that while they are still yet to play for a full four quarters there is definite improvement in the side.

Blyth said, “Every week we’re getting better, it’s just taking us a while to get there and we have a lot of juniors in our group that we are introducing gradually.”

“I thought tonight even though we were down, the girls were starting to put things into effect that we’ve done at training.”

In other the other matches for the round, Matrics had a close win against Newton Jaguars prevailing 56 – 51 on Friday night, while ETSA Contax continued their good form with an impressive victory defeating Health and Life Phoenix 54 – 32.

ETSA Contax move to top of the Subway Cup after round 5 win

ETSA Contax have moved to the top of the Subway Cup ladder defeating Contours Matrics 59 – 49 in their round 5 match at Netball SA stadium on Tuesday night.

The win for Contax also means that they remain the only undefeated team in the competition going into round 6 beginning on Friday night.

Contax got the better start in the first quarter on the back of good defensive pressure forcing an early held ball and turnover from Matrics. Their defence also looked to cut down space for Matrics’ in form shooter Cody Lange.  By mid way through the quarter the Matrics settled and took the lead.

However, their lead did not last long as Contax took advantage of some loose Matrics passes converting stolen possession into goals. Contax went into the first break with a 6-goal lead.

The first quarter was played at a good pace and this continued into the second as both sides tried to gain the upper hand.  Contax maintained their lead through good long shooting from GS Amanda Martin but Matrics were edging back late into the quarter.

Lange benefitted from one-on-one defence and good feeds from C Kyra Brown and WA Sheree Wingard with GA Stephanie Hentschel creating space in the circle. At half time Matrics had cut the lead to 1 goal.

As the third quarter began the match was in the balance and this was evident with the crowd sensing the knife-edge situation in the match. Matrics leveled early in the quarter as the sides went goal for goal.

The match then turned in dramatic fashion as Contax completely dominated the end of the quarter pouring on goal after goal. GD Jane Fitzgerald and GK Georgia Beaton were very good in defence showing good anticipation and deciding when to go after the ball extremely well. Fitzgerald and Martin were leading their young side well at each end of the court with the Contax scoring 19 goals for the quarter and jumping out to an 11-goal lead at the final break.

The final quarter was as tough and hard fought as the first with Matrics not giving up despite such a big turn around in the third. Despite good shooting from Matrics, the Contax young mid-courters kept their composure well and guided the side home. Madeleine Proud lead the mid-court well and displayed a good combination with fellow young gun Chloe Joyce in the final quarter.

Contax coach Leanne Eichler was happy with how her side responded to a tough challenge from Matrics.
“It was a tough game and we always knew we were going to get against the Trics but we got challenged at 31 all and it was good to see the fight in the girls when they are challenged.” She said.

Matrics assistant coach Sally Francis said that while the team played well the second half of the third quarter really cost them.

“I really think it was just a half a quarter in the third quarter, we started the quarter strongly we made a change in attack and started strong but they got a run on and made a few adjustments.”

“We didn’t adjust quickly enough, Contax are a quality opposition and can score very quickly and we let them do that.”

In the other round 5 matches Health and Life Phoenix defeated Woods Panthers 46 – 36 and The Royal Cougars notched up their first win of the competition beating Garville 67 – 30.

Round 6 matches commence on Friday the 20th of April at Netball SA Stadium at 7pm.
